Laura Jean McKay (Gunflower), Laurie Steed (Greater City Shadows) and Chemutai Glasheen (I Am The Mau and Other Stories) are not afraid to put their hearts and hopes into their fiction. They talk about how they find faith within their words and worlds. This session will be facilitated by Claire Nichols.

Laura Jean McKay

Laura Jean is the author of The Animals in That Country (Scribe, 2020) — winner of the Arthur C. Clarke Award, the Victorian Prize for Literature and the ABIA Small Publishers Adult Book of the Year, and co-winner of the Aurealis Award for Best Science Fiction Novel. She is also the author of Holiday in Cambodia (Black Inc., 2013). She was awarded the NZSA Waitangi Day Literary Honours in 2022. Her latest short story collection Gunflower was published by Scribe in 2023.

 

Laurie Steed

Laurie is a writer living and working on the lands of the Whadjuk Noongar people. He is the author of You Belong Here, published in 2018 and Love, Dad, published in 2023. His short fiction has been broadcast on BBC Radio 4 and published in Best Australian Stories, Award Winning Australian Writing, The Age and elsewhere. He completed his PhD in Creative Writing from The University of Western Australia in 2015 and is the recipient of fellowships from The University of Iowa, The Baltic Writing Residency and The Elizabeth Kostova Foundation. He lives with his wife and two children in Boorloo (Perth).

 

Chemutai Glasheen

Chemutai is a teacher and a writer. She writes fiction for young people and her work is influenced by her interest and experience in human rights and education. She is the author of I am the Mau and other Stories which is published by Fremantle Press. Her other creative work has been published in Unlimited Futures, Meniscus Volume 9 Issue 2 and ACE: Arresting Contemporary Stories by Emerging Writers.

 

Claire Nichols

Claire is the host of The Book Show on ABC Radio National, a weekly podcast and radio show that features in-depth interviews with the best authors from around the world. She has spent more than 15 years at the ABC, with roles in news, current affairs, local radio and at Radio National.
