Fri 23 Feb at The Rechabite Hall, from $44 – $49

‘Without the influence of Kraftwerk, NEU! and Can, the genres of post-punk and electronica would have had to look elsewhere for much of their inspiration.’

THE QUIETUS

Join innovative music pioneer Michael Rother and some of his influential friends as they revisit the legendary NEU! canon for a new audience (and old fans).

As a founding member of NEU!, Michael Rother (alongside his companion the late Klaus Dinger) has cast a line of inspiration that has shaped numerous musical generations. From his first musical genesis as a member of Kraftwerk and his work as Harmonia with Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Moebius, Michael has etched out an entirely personal sound world, most recently captured on a string of solo and collaborative albums.

Joined by long time collaborators Hans Lampe (La Düsseldorf), Franz Bargmann (exCamera) and Vittoria Maccabruni, this performance celebrates 50 years of NEU! and its groundbreaking legacy. It takes the now legendary NEU! canon and reworks it as a tribute to Klaus Dinger and in recognition of Michael Rother’s continued exploration of his utterly unique and profound way of music making. Hear a selection of favourite tracks from Michael´s long career, including fast-forward tracks from NEU! and Harmonia as well as solo works.

For many fans, musicians and critics alike the guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Michael Rother is a key figure of the innovative music scene originating from Germany in the early 1970s. His music has been inspirational for generations of musicians - from David Bowie, Brian Eno, Iggy Pop, DEVO, Sonic Youth, Stereolab, U2, Radiohead, Primal Scream, and beyond.

Michael was a member of Kraftwerk in 1971 and formed the legendary bands NEU! (with Klaus Dinger) and Harmonia (with Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Moebius of Cluster) before releasing 10 solo albums and creating music for theatre, dance performances and films.

Since the official re-release of the NEU! albums in 2001 Michael has played live in many countries around the world and collaborated with numerous musicians and bands like e.g. John Frusciante, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Dieter Moebius, Paul Weller, Yann Tiersen, Iggy Pop, Stephen Morris (New Order/Joy Division), Steve Shelley and Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth).

In 2019 and 2020 Groenland Records released the two box sets Michael Rother - Solo and Michael Rother - Solo 2 featuring his latest solo album Dreaming.

2022 saw the the release of the album As Long As The Light, Michael´s first collaboration with the Italian musician Vittoria Maccabruni. 2022 also marked the 50th anniversary of the first NEU! album for which Groenland Records released a boxset containing the first three NEU! albums plus two tribute albums with reworks amd remixes inspired by NEU! for which musicians and bands like The National, Mogwai, Idles, Stephen Morris (New Order/Joy Division), Yann Tiersen, ManMan, They Hate Change, Alexis Taylor (Hot Chip), Fink and Guerilla Toss contributed new recordings.

In 2022 and 2023, Michael played live in Berlin, London, Barcelona and at festivals in China and South Korea where he participated at the legendary DMZ Peace Train Music Festival.
