Like a Version. Like Magic.
Five Like a Version's we love
If you need a fix of these Perth Festival 2022 muso’s before their gigs, take a look at these masterful performances for Triple J's Like A Version they’ve played over the years. We just can’t get enough.
Alter Boy
Huge advocates for the deaf community, Perth powerhouse Alter Boy showcase the way music can exist in different ways on both the visual and auditory plane.
Championing Auslan, they took on Lil Nas X’s ‘Montero (Call Me By Your Name)’, a cheeky song that the group said was a lot of fun to sign. It fittingly intersects religion with queerness and other identities, themes Alter Boy explore in their own music. We are so excited for their Fremantle Arts Centre show in Feb, get a preview of what to expect and let their audiovisuals captivate you.
Methyl Ethel
We are stoked that Methyl Ethel are kicking off their tour with us in Feb.This mash up almost shouldn’t work, but very much does!
Check them out fusing two great pieces of Australian music, The Avalanches ‘Frontier Psychiatrist’ and Sycco’s ‘Dribble’, cleverly melding live brass versions of samples with Jake’s taut vocals. Their ingenious cover has us itching for what they have in store for their in-the-round show. We can’t wait!
Stella Donnelly
On Valentine’s day 2020, Stella Donnelly took to the ABC studios for a rendition of John Paul Young’s iconic love song ‘Love is in the Air’.
At the time Stella said her plans for the year were to stay home and “enjoy Western Australia for a little while”, now a bit of an eerie foreshadowing moment...
Always embodying exactly what the moment calls for, Stella’s crisp, ethereal vocals shine in this cover. We can’t wait to see her sparkling energy on stage in Feb!
Pond
Why did Pond take on Madonna’s hit Ray of Light for Like A Version? “Umm, I love it…I love the song, I listen to it probably too much” is what Nick Allbrook told Triple J Breakkie’s Ben and Liam back in 2019.
They’re starting their 2022 World Tour with a show on their home turf of Walyalup/Freo. We’ve got this sparky and psychedelic cover on repeat in anticipation. Because, umm, we love it.
Ta-ku
Widely and wildly talented multidisciplinary artist Ta-ku said back in 2016 that he still thought of himself as a “sampling bedroom producer”. He's all that and more!
We absolutely cannot wait to see what he’s producing to fill the rooms at historical Lawson Apartments. We know it’ll be an immersive experience full of art installations, all sound tracked by his highly anticipated first album. In the meantime, have a groove while listening to his smooth-as cover of JoJo’s 'Leave (Get Out)'.
