We're inviting young people between the ages of 16 -26 who have a love of film to be ambassadors of the 2022 Lotterywest Festival Films at UWA Somerville.
What does it entail, you ask? We had a few quick Qs for our Community Engagement Manager, Ellie, as this club seems too good to be true...
What is Film Club?
Ellie: Film Club is a Perth Festival program for young people to experience our film program in its entirety!
We’ll select about 12 young people to go as a group to the Lotterywest Films at UWA Somerville on Monday evenings – each film’s opening night. It’s a chance for them to champion the program, have a space to discuss their opinions and meet new people!
How did it come about?
Ellie: Tom (our Film Programmer) and I were discussing what community engagement in a film context would look like. As well as wanting to know what young people thought about the program, we also wanted to create an opportunity to experience it with others in a more meaningful way.
Going to the cinema is much more than just the film itself – it’s about the smell of wood fired pizzas, sitting under the beautiful pines, getting excited about new trailers, reveling in unexpected audience reactions and debating the film afterwards with friends.
We wanted to make a space where young people could come together and do this together, while giving them the opportunity for a bigger dialogue and to have their opinions heard.
Who can get involved?
E: Anyone between the age of 16-26 who is a film lover is encouraged to apply!
You don’t need to work in or study the arts, in fact, we’re looking for people from all different areas because a range of different voices will make the conversation more interesting. Film is for everyone.
As a commitment to inclusion, we are open to discussing any barriers to access for applicants, and working with them to find solutions, including travel costs and difficulties with English. If you have any questions or need assistance, please email us.
Why should they get involved?
E: One of the great joys of the arts is sharing the experience with others – it can change the way we think and feel about things, create discussion and give us a platform to connect with people.
Film Club is a chance to be an ambassador for the program, think about the ideas presented in the films and how these relate to yourself and your place in the world. It's also a chance to see the film program in its entirety for free – a rare offering!

Follow up q, HOW do they get involved?
E: Those interested just need to fill out a form which can be found on the Film Club webpage. Successful applications will have the opportunity to watch every film’s opening night (Mondays) with the group, then discuss the experience informally over three meetings with our Film Programmer, Tom. We might even ask you to write a review, or interview you for the Perth Festival blog!
You don’t know who you might meet at Film Club, what opportunities it could lead to or connections you could make – so it could be just about the best thing you do this year!
