Schools Performances

There are some performances in our season that come with cheaper prices specifically for schools to access. In 2024, these shows are Jungle Book reimagined, Wayfinder, Brooklyn Rider, The Pool and Wundig wer Wilura.

Jungle Book reimagined

FOR TEACHERS

Curriculum links include: the interpretation and reimagination of a text through physical approaches, form and style, and design technologies to creatively realise the text on stage for an intended audience and impact; Points of view to shape audience perspective and impact regarding historical, social, and cultural contexts; Relativity to practitioner approaches including Bertolt Brecht, Jerzy Grotowski, Anne Bogart and Tina Landau, Jacques Lecoq and Rudolf von Laban; An immersive and imaginative insight to the application of theatre technologies, multimedia, the principles of design, and elements of design through the collaboration of the creative team including sound, lighting, visual, set and video/animation design that collectively support a director’s vision to ‘educate and awaken the consciousness and consequent will’ of the audience.

Wayfinder

FOR TEACHERS

Curriculum links include; Choreographic processes and intentional shaping of choreographic devices & structures to explore themes and ideas; Contemporary dance practices; Contribution to dance in the form of social commentary and the use of artistic expression to explore themes of humanity, well-being, connection to nature, and culture; Complex and extended dance sequences, including ensemble, solo and duet work; Interactive relationship between design concepts including sound, costume and staging, and dance design; Immersive and interactive audience/performer relationship.

Brooklyn Rider

FOR TEACHERS

Brooklyn Rider, other than being one of the world’s most accomplished string quartets, bring a beautiful opportunity to compare and contrast the old-and-new, as classics are played alongside new commissions. Brooklyn Rider demonstrate music’s ability to represent ideas as they explore climate, the natural world, the evolution of music’s cultural and historical context, and our changed relationship to the elements.    

CONTENT SUITABILITY

Recommended for ages 12+ due to the length & quiet nature of the performance, however all ages are welcome.

The Pool

FOR TEACHERS

The Pool is a new Australian work written by Steve Rodgers and directed by Kate Champion, performed poolside at Bold Park Aquatic Centre. This innovative production offers drama students a distinct vantage point on the intricate interplay between space and performance, immersing them in the world of site-specific theatre.  English students will enjoy experiencing a prime example of multimodal text, diverse narratives, viewpoints, and themes.  

CONTENT SUITABILITY

This production is suited to Years 7 – 12. Audiences are provided with headsets and will be invited to join an Aqua Fit class at the end of the show.

Sun Signals: Bodies in Action Workshop

FOR TEACHERS

This workshop will build on the learning experience provided in exhibition tours of Joan Jonas’s Sun Signals. Get physical in PICA’s gallery spaces while uncovering insights into interdisciplinary creative practice. Build connections for students across the Arts learning area through an artist-led workshop and exhibition tour that brings together performance, video, drawing and installation. Hands-on activities with artist Sarah Nelson will focus on developing student knowledge and skills to devise visual and physical performance, and to create interactive design that responds to space. This exhibition showcases the iconic video and performance works of Jonas whose boundary crossing approach has shaped generations of artists since the 1960s. Together, these tours and workshops will encourage students to explore the gallery as a stage and encounter different techniques of communicating meaning through movement, material and form.

This event is best suited for Secondary Students in Years 10 to 12 in Dance, Drama, Media Arts and Visual Arts.

Wundig Wer Wilera

FOR TEACHERS

I will love you til the stars fall down from the sky 

Wundig wer Wilura is a Nyittiny (Creation) story which is forever entrenched in the hills of Mount Brown (Wongborel) and Mount Bakewell (Walwalling), in York, in the heart of Balladong country. It is a must see production for students and teachers and embraces Dance, Design, Drama, Music and Visual Art.  It is a performance that will enrich students intercultural understanding as this ancient story comes to life.  Sung entirely in Noongar language with English translations on screens either side of the stage Wundig wer Wilura supports cross-curriculum priorities Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and culture. 

CONTENT SUITABILITY

This work is for secondary students only. Content includes death, violence and supernatural themes. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are advised that this work may contain images and sounds that relate to people who have passed away.
