The Literature Centre

The Literature Centre is unique – a place to nurture young people’s interest in reading and writing, using innovative techniques to explore and interpret literature. Uniquely located within the walls of the Old Fremantle Prison, it is the only centre of its kind in Australia.
PLEASE NOTE: Due to delays with the Centre’s restoration works, the new location for Literature & Ideas is East Workshops in Fremantle Prison. Access only via Fothergill Street gate.
The Centre is housed in the Old Prison Hospital of the Fremantle Prison, which is a World Heritage- listed site. All visitors are asked to respect the heritage of these surroundings, and take care when walking in and around the Centre.
Free parking is available on the Hampton Road grass reserve. Vehicle entry/exit is only via Knutsford Street, driving on the grass to the Fothergill Street side of the Prison.
Pedestrians can only access East Workshops via the Fothergill Street gate, just off Hampton Road.
Limited ACROD parking is available by driving in the Fothergill Street gate, just off Hampton Road. ACROD pass must be shown to security guard. Maximum 10 vehicles.
The Literature Centre is located a 10 minute walk from Fremantle Train Station.
Buses frequently travel to the area.
