About Dada Masilo
Dada was born in Johannesburg, South Africa and trained at The Dance Factory, where she is now Artist-in-Residence. After training abroad at P.A.R.T.S. in Brussels she returned to South Africa and presented three commissions from the National Arts Festival – Romeo and Juliet (2008), Carmen (2009) and Swan Lake (2010) – which have since toured extensively throughout Europe.
Dada Masilo’s Giselle premiered in 2017 and in its first year was performed in Oslo, Finland, Geneva, Italy and the USA, as well as South Africa. Masilo’s bold deconstructions and re-imaginings of classical ballet have garnered her an international reputation, redefining the idea of ownership of legacy ballets. Stripping back the genealogy, class, pomp and circumstance, she reveals the heart of the story in a thrilling combination of ballet, African movement and contemporary dance.
Masilo is also a frequent collaborator of William Kentridge, and last appeared on Perth’s stages at the 2016 Festival in his Refuse The Hour.
