Songs for Freedom
Presented by The City of Melville & Big hART with the Roebourne Community
Songs for Freedom fills the Perth night air with the uplifting songs and stories from Ieramugadu (Roebourne), in a special evening for the whole family by the Swan River, at Dyoondalup, Point Walter Riverside Park.
Performed by a stellar cast, this homegrown concert captures the essence of the Pilbara, the joy of living on country and the spirit of a town that knows love, loss and resilience. Led by broadcaster and Grammy Award-winning artist Lucky Oceans, Songs for Freedom features an ensemble of Western Australian musical collaborators and prominent Ieramugadu musicians. Artists include Naomi Pigram, Kankawa Nagarra, John Bennett, Stephen Pigram, Jay Jarome, Patrick Churnside, David Hyams, Tyson Mowarin and special guests (to be announced).
Songs for Freedom in Perth is the culmination of 10 years of songwriting development and intercultural exchange on Ngarluma country in the West Pilbara involving leading Australian musicians - in the community, the prison, with Elders and young people. Workshops began in the prison to honour John Pat – a 16-year-old whose death in custody in 1983 brought much sorrow and trauma to Roebourne.
Through songwriting Ieramugadu began to sing again, giving rise to the Murru album and a series of concerts presented annually at the John Pat Peace Place in Ieramugadu on the International Day of Peace. The community has shared the stage with many well-loved musicians. After a warmly received debut in 2021 they’re returning to Noongar Boodjar (Perth) and the banks of the Derbarl Yerrigan (Swan River) with new songs and imagery celebrating the continuous living culture of the Pilbara.
We acknowledge and express our deep gratitude to the Noongar Elders and their custodians past, present and emerging, on whose Country this concert is performed.
