Presented in association with Fremantle Arts Centre

Join Dr Cindy Solonec (author of Debesa: The Story of Frank and Katie Rodriguez) and Dr Elfie Shiosaki (author of Homecoming) for a not-to-be-missed session exploring two very different and exquisite works of love, family, culture and resistance.

Moderated by Sisonke Msimang, Solonec and Shiosaki discuss the hidden legacies revealed within colonial archives and the intergenerational impact of the Aborigines Act 1905.

Elfie Shiosaki

Elfie is a Noongar and Yawuru writer. She is a Lecturer in Indigenous Rights at the School of Indigenous Studies at The University of Western Australia. She was the editor of Indigenous Writing at Westerly from 2017 to 2021. Elfie is the co-editor of maar bidi: next generation black writing (Magabala Books 2020). Homecoming is her first solo collection.

Dr Cindy Solonec

Cindy, a Nigena (Nyikina) woman from the West Kimberley, is married with two daughters and five grandchildren. She graduated with a PhD in History from The University of Western Australia in 2016. Debesa is a rewriting of her thesis that explored a social history in the West Kimberley, based on the way her parents and extended family lived during the mid-1900s. As a university sessional staff member, Cindy lectures and tutors in addressing Aboriginal themes. She is a member of the History Council of Western Australia and she plays violin with Encore, a seniors’ all-strings orchestra.
