EMA
‘Erotic and suspenseful … one of the most ambitious and visually stunning films of the year.’
Award-winning director Pablo Larraín unites Gael García Bernal with newcomer Mariana Di Girolamo in an incendiary new drama about art, desire, performance and family.
Set in the vibrant dance world of the port city of Valparaíso in Chile, the passionate young dancer Ema and her choreographer husband are reeling after returning their adopted son back to child services. The couple’s agonising decision spins the marriage into chaos, but the guilt-ridden Ema embarks on an odyssey of passionate freedom.
Interspersing sequences of jaw-dropping choreography with a gripping and ingeniously structured narrative of seduction and manipulation, and fuelled by a pulsating score and eye-popping visuals, EMA is an electrifying film. Like its lead character it is tender, volatile, physical and fully alive.
