About

Comic book movies seem set to dominate the cinema box office for eons to come. Beyond the blockbusters, we invite you to delve deeper into the wider world of films adapted from graphic sources.

As part of Writers Week, we present a widely diverse selection of films in terms of genre and style, all derived from comic strips, graphic novels and manga. From absurd knockabout cartoons to everyday hip realism, and from historical memoir to dystopian sci-fi, these four films take the personal artistic visions of the original source and bring them to life in full Technicolor brilliance.

Each film in the series will be introduced by a Writers Week guest – one of Perth’s own comic book heroes.

IN THIS CORNER OF THE WORLD (2016) Japan

Fumiyo Kōno’s popular account of a talented young illustrator growing up in wartime Hiroshima was serialised in Japan between 2007 and 2009. This wonderful animated adaptation retains the original’s sense of the human world often at odds with nature, and the humane sympathy at its core.
