One of the most important living voices in Australia, Archie Roach is a beacon of empathy, forgiveness and warmth. As soulful as he is resplendent, Uncle Archie’s songs are as potent as his stories. There is no better way to open Chevron Gardens than via a celebration of indigenous song, led by our elder statesman in his most lucid and insightful form yet.

As razor sharp as he is expressive, Radical Son is the next generation of soul power.
With a robust and powerful vocal, David Leha aka Radical Son is an indigenous-Tongan performer who mashes soul, hip hop and R&B flavours with flair. Politically active and outspoken, Leha’s recordings include a number of collaborations with the likes of Archie Roach and Emma Donovan. Leha was last seen in Perth Festival as a cast member of triumphant opera, The Rabbits.

Soft, honeyed vocals with a tropical dusting, Emily Wurramara is a delight.
Her dulcet tones first caught our attention on the triple j airwaves. Featuring songs in English and her traditional language Anindilyakwa, Wurramara’s debut EP Black Smoke amassed more than one million Spotify streams. The Groote Eylandt via Brisbane singer-songwriter continues to turn heads with her deft fusion of two worlds, her debut album brimming with soft ditties and tales of the intersections of two cultures.

Guitar-driven emotion with impassioned moshpit fury: Nothing But Thieves rock hard.
UK emo-rockers Nothing But Thieves have a compelling charm, tipping their hat to the likes of The Killers, Snow Patrol and Biffy Clyro. Their cover of Gnarls Barkly’s Crazy is an earworm, conjuring indie-rock wonders Placebo. Their latest EP brims with hook-laden anthems destined to turn the Chevron Gardens mosh pit into a frenzy. Catch these guys before they leave intimate venues in their wake.
Three musical greats combine for improvised jazz fireworks of the wildest order.
Improvised jazz has the capacity to polarise audiences. But the individual skill and talents of The Others trio are too magnetic to ignore. As a long-time Spiderbait fan, I was first drawn to The Others by drummer, kryptonite Kram. Add to that, trumpeter extraordinaire James Morrison and cyclonic pianist, Paul Grabowsky, and the potential for an explosive performance is tripled. Wonderfully spontaneous, this will be the show everyone is talking about.
Cat Power: where strength meets vulnerability and flowers into cracklingly fragile beauty.
The first time I saw Cat Power perform, she lay down on the floor in front of the stage, sang a few tortured notes, and exited stage left. We loved her then, as we love her now, but the best thing is Chan Marshall has risen from her troubled past to embrace fragility, vulnerability and aching beauty with gusto. A true artist who lives the rawness, Cat Power is sublime.
R&B soulful good times coupled with smash hit singles.
One of the smoothest artists of this year’s roll call, Aloe Blacc is a master of R&B cool. Although best known for his smash hit singles, such as I Need a Dollar, it is his Marvin Gaye-esque soul tunes that are most engaging. A consummate entertainer, Aloe Blacc will have the Chevron Gardens crowd baying for more.
There ain’t no party like an old skool party – hip hop hooray!
As a lover of all things wickedly 80’s and 90’s, the JBs hold a very special place in my heart. Unjustly missing the mega spotlight of their contemporaries De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest, Jungle Brothers throw killer beats, forming some of the sassiest hip hop R&B jams. As they celebrate 30 years since the release of Straight Out the Jungle, I will be getting down deep.

Perth’s very own hip hop crew, Downsyde had the Chevron Gardens crowd pumping hard as they warmed the stage for A.B Original this year. Charismatic, enthusiastic and quite simply vibin’, it’s no wonder Downsyde hold such a special place in Perth audiences’ hearts. Be sure to catch these guys warming the stage for the JBs.
Sexy, sassy, stripped back and superb, The Preatures Unplugged is next level wonderful.
I love The Preatures and their everso dazzling frontwoman, Izzi Manfredi. But I needed a good excuse to present them as part of the 2019 program. Enter the unplugged soiree, an opportunity to enjoy the band’s spectacular repertoire, stripped back and intimate. They’ll be rolling out the hits as we bask in their catchy melodies and sass-soaked choruses. Yep, this is how I feeeeeel!
A charm bomb of indie-folk and alt-country bliss.
One of the dreamiest artists to emerge from the indie-folk scene in some time, Julia Jacklin speared hearts and minds with her epic debut album, Don’t Let the Kids Win. Invoking all the greats, from Angel Olsen to Fiona Apple, Jacklin’s confessional alt-country is hypnotic. I’ll be the one standing motionless as she unfurls each and every delicate package of melody and charm, celebrating the release of her new record.
Humour, joy, heartache and wonder, Julien Baker is a delicate slice of meditative splendour.
I last saw Julien Baker on an outdoor stage at Osheaga Festival in Montreal. The sound bleed from the nearby techno stage was intense, but her heartbreakingly divine songs cut through and left me breathless. She’ll have you in tears before she wraps you back up in her searingly beautiful ditties, crafted where vulnerability and resilience collide.
Intense, dark and apocalyptic: not for the faint-hearted.
At once ear-piercingly intense and furious, Deafheaven create theatrical splendour. While this sound is not for everyone, I encourage you to delve into the depths of apocalyptic emotion and rippling black metal to touch another realm. With a penchant for grand gestures and extremes, Deafheaven rewards listeners with ferocious blasts.

For 2019, all my money is on Zeal & Ardor as the sure-fire hot ticket. Mashing black metal with gospel and African-American slavery blues, there could be no more thrilling a fusion. Blood-curdlingly powerful, and born from a punter suggestion to fuse two of the most unlikely genres, Zeal & Ardor is an eruption of sheer ferocity.
Party-starters, mischief-makers and all ‘round funsters, Melbourne Ska Orchestra will keep you dancing.
Melbourne Ska Orchestra ringleader, Nicky Bomba is one of the most entertaining artists around. He loves a crowd sing-along (and dance-along!), and his extreme energy is mind-bogglingly infectious. With more than 20 people on stage, MSO is a one-stop shop of skankin’ ska good times. We dare you to stand still!
Heartbreakingly tender, Rhye’s silken vocals are at once seductive and transcendent.
I first discovered Rhye via one of the sexiest music videos I had ever seen: Don’t Pull Away floored me. And Rhye frontman Mike Milosh was merely the feature artist. After seeing the band perform at London’s All Points East festival, I knew they would make the ideal Sunday chill. Milosh’s voice is unearthly: sizzling, engulfing and enchanting. An evening in the company of Rhye is simply divine.
Dream-pop dream-weavers of cult-like indie awesome.
With tickets almost sold out, it’s obvious everyone is as excited as we are for this show. Otherworldly in their vision, Beach House has a well-deserved, cult-like following who salivate over the dream-pop canon of this remarkable duo. The first act confirmed for 2019, we're stoked Beach House is joining us at Chevron Gardens.
As hip as hip comes, The Internet drank the cool-aid.
Everything about The Internet screams party. I love this band. And not only because their jams are compelling. They are style and fashion heroes; they are trailblazers and laissez-faire lounge lizards and they are as effortlessly cool as they are danceable. I’ll be fumbling my way through the dancefloor of hipsterdom to party with The Internet, but ain’t nothin’ gonna break my stride.
Heroes of the rave cave, Orbital mash cosmic ambience with bouncy beats.
As well as embracing hip hop beats in the 90’s, I was deep in the rave cave, glow stick shaking to Orbital into the wee hours. Veterans of the dance scene, Orbital’s staying power is testament to their unique blend of acid house, techno and electronica. Once again, it’s clear you are as pumped as we are to see the Hartnoll brothers in action, as tickets for this one are pretty well all snapped up.
French electro-pop heaven channelling Michael Jackson dance moves.
Christine & the Queens has been my obsession since I started at Perth Festival. Her bold politics, her dance moves, her sexuality, sass and sauciness are awe-inspiring. I first saw her as an opening act at Boston Calling festival and my jaw dropped to the floor as I texted Artistic Director Wendy Martin: “OMG. WE NEED HER.” This one is my other must-see of the festival. Do. Not. Miss. This. Show.
