Lotterywest Festival Films :: Buddha Collapsed Out of Shame
Director: Hana Makhmalbaf · 81min · M
In Farsi with subtitles
Hana Makhmalbaf’s explosive broadside against the Taliban is set in the Afghani province of Bamian. In 2001, the Taliban destroyed a pair of massive fifth-century Buddha carvings. Today the magnificent statues loom in absentia over Makhmalbaf’s pointed parable.
Inspired by her neighbour’s recitations, Baktay, a smiley and determined six-year-old, decides she wants to go to school. Her first lesson is in economics as she tries to barter some eggs for the pen and paper she’ll need for class. But that’s nothing compared to the ensuing tutorial in cultural studies when she is menaced by a callow faction of boys playing ‘Taliban’ – and playing it to the hilt.
Jury Prize, San Sebastian Film Festival 2007 Crystal Bear and Peace Film Award, Berlin Film Festival 2008
Short film screening first (Somerville only) Legacy/Australia
Director: Grant Sputore · 14min · PG
On leave from the Front, Donald makes one last attempt to save his brother from the life their father has unwittingly prepared for him.
It is idolisation of a different and much more sinister sort that flows beneath this story of one little girl’s odyssey to school; the way in which children idolise and copy their parents ****
