PETER GRIMES
BY BENJAMIN BRITTEN
WEST AUSTRALIAN OPERA AND PERTH INTERNATIONAL ARTS FESTIVAL IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE AUSTRALIAN YOUTH ORCHESTRA PRESENT
A co-production of Opera Australia, Houston Grand Opera and West Australian Opera and Perth International Arts Festival
Featuring an epic tenor role and breathtaking orchestral score, Benjamin Britten's classic captures one man's struggle against cruel fate and a crueler society. Peter Grimes is an outsider in a small fishing village. When his apprentice dies at sea, the village closes ranks and sets out blindly for retribution.
Widely regarded as the finest tenor today in the role of Grimes, Grammy Award-winning Anthony Dean Griffey brings an intensity and humanity to the role that is riveting.
Neil Armfield, winner of the 2009 Helpmann Award for Britten's Billy Budd, directs this haunting and poignant journey, while The Australian Youth Orchestra under acclaimed conductor Richard Mills perform the powerful music.
