AMADOU & MARIAM
Exuberant and full of spirit, this husband and wife duo mix traditional sounds from Mali with blues guitar, salsa drums, Egyptian flutes and Cuban trumpets. Beyond 'world music', Amadou's heady guitar and Mariam's lilting voice easily slide from garage-rock to solemn love songs to euphoric Afro Blues.
Already superstars in Africa, they are conquering the West, having worked with luminary producer Manu Chao and most recently with Damon Albarn (Gorillaz) on their critically adored Welcome to Mali. 2009 saw them tour with Coldplay across the US.
AFTER PARTY
Mo DJ (Mali) and DJ Mo Laudi (South Africa)
Cassette vendor along the station road in Bamako by day and DJ by night, Mo DJ was one of the first to remix Malian and African music. Using any means available, he's revolutionising Western dance floors.
Pioneering DJ Mo-Laudi is years ahead of the game, mixing ethnic/tropical vibes with his unique electro and lyricism. His groundbreaking performances have taken him around the globe.
In a world where African artists are often expected to conform to nebulous tropes of ‘authenticity’ and ‘rootiness’, their music is thrillingly off -message, distinctly African but never particularly alien to ears raised on Western rock music. UNCUT
