From one of Germany’s most respected directors, Barbara is a haunting portrait of unexpected love and charity in the claustrophic confines of a surveillance state. In communist East Germany, Barbara is exiled to work in a country medical clinic as punishment for applying for an exit visa. She is caught between her desire for freedom in the West and her growing loyalties to her new life.
