Estonian Arvo Pärt is one of the most popular and recorded classical composers alive today. His meditative and mystical St John Passion melds religious narrative with the deep spiritual impulses of vocal music, each note ringing in purity, creating the uplifting sensation of being in a resonant cathedral.
Entirely in Latin, this austere masterpiece typifi es Pärt's tintinnabuli technique, in which single notes and triads form simple harmonies, sung in unchanging tempos. The result is singing reminiscent of ringing bells, with notes drifting softly into lingering resonance.
