THE SICILIAN GIRL
LA SICILIANA RIBELLE
Director: Marco Amenta • 110min • M
In Italian with subtitles
In November 1991, Rita Atria (Veronica D'Agostino), a young Sicilian girl, visited anti-Mafia judge Paolo Borsellino to denounce the Mafia system responsible for the murder of her father and brother. It was the first time that a woman from a Mafia family broke the villagers' code of silence, turning state witness, as she rebelled against and betrayed the Mafia. From that moment on, Rita's days were numbered. Inspired by a true story, this is Italian cinema at its finest. The Mafia lifestyle of the period is powerfully portrayed, recounting a major turning point in Sicily's war against organised crime.
A dark, riveting tale made even more compelling by a heartbreaking performance from actress Veronica D’Agostino. NEW ZEALAND WOMEN’S WEEKLY
