STONE OF DESTINY
AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE | JOONDALUP EXCLUSIVE
Director: Charles Martin Smith • 96min • PG
Stolen from Scotland by Edward I in 1296, the Stone of Destiny served as Coronation Stone for the Kings and Queens of England for centuries. In 1950, after a petition for Scottish home rule is rejected by British Parliament, Edinburgh college student Ian Hamilton hatches a daring plot to steal the Stone back from London's Westminster Abbey – symbolically avenging the historical theft and furthering the cause of Scottish nationalism. Finding a trustworthy team proves to be the challenge.
Based on a true story, this feel-good Scottish gem recalls the Ealing movies of the 1950s and features a fantastic cast, including Robert Carlyle, Brenda Fricker and Peter Mullan. The film perfectly captures the emotions aroused by the Stone's recovery and its importance in Scottish history.
