From 1939 to 1945 Norway was occupied by the Nazis, and it fell on the gallant Norwegian resistance hero Max Manus (1914–1996) to save his homeland from the Third Reich. Manus was responsible for some of the most daring and spectacular sabotage assignments in Norway and his friendship with other young fighters in Nazi-occupied Oslo is portrayed with great warmth, comedy and boyish charm.

Brilliantly played by Aksel Hennie, Max Manus never stopped believing that the Germans could be beaten, even though he lost his friends one by one in the battle for freedom. Both Manus' widow Tikken and Gunnar Sønsteby, one of the legendary resistance fighters portrayed in the film, became involved in the film's production – making the intense action scenes of this sweeping war drama all the more authentic and fascinating.
